SUMMARY:TEMPLES
DESCRIPTION:Temples Properties:  \nWebsite: https://www.templestheband.com/  \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/templesofficial/  \nInstagram:  https://www.instagram.com/templesofficial/  \nTwitter: https://twitter.com/templesofficial  \nTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@templesofficial  \nYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdorDsEgYHYAFhWC2a2l8YA  \nSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4ogwGU9VPWrnVBs1GEwZVV\n \n\nTemples’ name has become synonymous with a band with an adventurous spirit; a group constantly coursing with ideas and invention. On their fifth album\, ‘Bliss’\, they prove that to be the case once again\, shaking up the general perception of the Kettering-formed four-piece with a record that flies in new electronic directions\, while staying true to their core DNA. The euphoric and melancholic melodies of late ‘90s dance music\, and the golden era of the Ibiza scene\, combine with psych-tinged riffs and loops to make something thrillingly fresh. As with any adventure\, though\, getting to this triumphant record wasn’t without its challenges. In 2023\, the band -James Bagshaw (vocals/guitar)\, Thomas Walmsley (bass)\, Adam Smith (keyboards/guitar) and Rens Ottink (drums) -released their fourth album\, ‘Exotico’. Instead of making a splash\, its release felt more like an isolated drop. The reaction to it was passive\, and some of the fans they met on the road were unaware it even existed. In the aftermath\, an article asking “what happened to Temples” suggested Bagshaw had swapped band life for academia. “For the record\, I do not work at Leeds University\,” he laughs now. That response had nothing to do with the quality of the music or a lack of interest from their audience\, but a disconnect in the system around the band. “That was the really disheartening thing\,” says Bagshaw. “We knew that our fans were out there. We knew from going on tour that the fanbase was strong and still dedicated. Instead\, it felt like there was this complacency from all areas outside of what we were doing.”Understandably dejected\, when touring around ‘Exotico’ ended\, the band hit a necessary standstill. They were keen to break free from the typical cycle of music-making where “your last record always informs what you do next”\, but had to rebuild and reconnect with their original creative purpose that started this journey nearly a decade-and-a-half ago. “A lot of people have preconceptions of what you’re known for\, or your sound\,” reasons Walmsley. “There’s so much more to us as a band and as a group of people\, and I feel like that’s found its way into the band as well. We’re completely reconnecting with why we started and who we’re making the music for -which is ourselves.”Eventually\, Temples built a new team around them and signed a deal with V2 Records\, but it was the creative relationship between the four band members that was key to their rejuvenation. After initially sending song ideas to each other remotely\, it was when they got back in aroom together and began working on things in person that their “shared vision” and “just how fun” making this music was together became quickly apparent.Where on ‘Exotico’\, the band worked with guest producer Sean Ono Lennon\, this time it felt like ‘Bliss’ could only be produced by Temples themselves. “It was probably the most empowering thing we could do\, because it didn’t rely on anybody else’s flair or creativity or patience\,” Bagshaw explains. “That was very freeing. It felt like you could just improvise.”Improvise\, they did. ‘Bliss’ finds the band experimenting with samplers –not to rework parts of other artists’ songs\, but to do so with their own. Sometimes\, they’d sample an element of the song they were working on at the time. “We’d get to this point in a song where something wasn’t fully realised\, and we would then create samples of that song\, then manipulate that to basically make a new sound\,” says Bagshaw. The samples became a shared network across the album\, a palette of sounds where each could be lifted from one song to another\, reversed\, reworked and reimagined. “Picasso had the blue period where he’d use those pigments and particular colours; we were building up audio Pantones. It feels a bit more like a collage and almost like remixing\, but not in a traditional remix sense.”Sonically\, the album sees Temples rework elements of dance music in their image. Lead single ‘Jet Stream Heart’\, a song about being seduced by music\, mimics the feeling of dancing right in front of the speakers in a club. “We all know that feeling of walking past somewhere where there’s loud music playing\, and it’s that kind of allure -there’s something about hypnotic beats that just pulls you into the jet stream\,” Bagshaw says. “Ironically\, if this song was playing ina club and I was walking past\, I’d be like\, ‘What the fuck is that? I’m gonna go and check it out.’”The dazzling dart of ‘Vendetta’ perfectly marries scuzzy riffs with lasering synths and a bubbling dance melody. Originally\, the two halves were intendedto be two separate songs\, but it was only when the band put them together that they worked. “Suddenly\, you had this almost Justice\, Daft Punk-sounding sample that then goes into something that could be a modern take on dance music\, like a David Guetta or Avicii song\,” notes Bagshaw. “It should be a shock to the senses; it should make you want to move. It should feel resistant and like it’s pulling you in loads of different ways.”Similarly\, ‘Blue Flame’ took shape from a chorus Smith had in his pocket forsome years. Slower\, steadier and packed with that gently fizzing chorus\, it tackles disconnection at its core\, its icier sound reflecting a distance between both humanity and nature\, and the growing divide between each other. ‘Revelations’ nods to the Gregorian chant that was commonly deployed in late ‘90s and early ‘00s European dance music with its own take\, fittingly opening a track that has a spiritual bent. “The verses are quite angry\, but more matter-of-fact\, with a situation you’re in or the way things are\,” Walmsley explains. “The chorus is the revelation moment where you’re realising that state is temporary and what’s permanent is that things change.”The crunching stomp of ‘Megalith’\, too\, deals with frustrations. “It’s about finding your inner stillness\, but then having found that stillness\, maybe it’s not so pleasant\,” says Smith. “You can sometimes feel helpless and stuck when the world is moving around you\, and you feel like a standing stone\, like a megalith\, and there’s nothing you can do about it. So it’s about both surrendering to the fact that you have no control over what happens\, but also the fear that comes along with that.”Although too young to have been involved in the rave culture of the late ‘90s themselves\, it’s something they grew up aware of\, hearing the songs through older siblings’ bedroom doors. ‘Bliss’ connects to those memories and uses them to push forward\, create something new. “There’s just something about that music where\, albeit not very complex\, it brings up complex emotions\,” Bagshaw says. “It’s bittersweet -a melancholic euphoria.” Influences came from a vast spectrum of electronic music -Faithless\, Underworld\, Prodigy\, Air\, Röyksopp\, Moby\, Massive Attack\, Orbital\, Portishead\, and more. “They all have something in common\, and you can’t really define exactly what it is\, but it’s a feeling and a mood -and we’ve wholeheartedly recreated that across this record.”To some\, Temples turning to this era and genre for inspiration might seem out of the blue\, a left-field choice\, but to the band\, it’s natural. The lineage and connection between psych and dance music is strong\, both sharing a tendency for loops and trance-like states. “We’ve always had space in our songs\, there’s repetition and some improvisation\,” says Smith. “We’ve done the same here\, but with a different sonic palette.”‘Bliss’\, for the four members\, represents not just a feeling in the music\, but a synergy between the band and shared creative freedom. “If any record before was refining what we’ve done\, it feels like ‘Bliss’ is about permission to let go and be more physical with our music and let everything breathe and build more\,” says Walmsley.“We’re at a place where we’re just more accepting\,” adds Bagshaw. “I think a lot of artists will agree that there are periods in your career where you don’t worry about your fans liking things. We don’t want them to hate it\, but we’ve just done exactly what we want to do in a purely selfish way\, and that becomes not selfish when people connect with it. You get that sense of creative bliss if you just do what you want as a group.Obviously\, it references the past\, but this is a forward-looking record that genuinely doesn’t sound like anyone else. People should throw out whatever they thought we were -this is what weare.”

SUMMARY:SEX PISTOLS (Steve Jones\, Paul Cook\, Glen Matlock) featuring Frank Carter
DESCRIPTION:For suite rentals\, please email friendsof@longhornballroom.com \nSEX PISTOLS \nOn the afternoon of his first appearance onstage with the Sex Pistols\, last summer at Bush Hall\, Frank Carter’s peaceful afternoon stroll on the streets of Shepherd’s Bush was interrupted by a stranger sat outside a pub. “Big shoes\,” the man shouted; nothing more\, nothing less. \n“That’s all he said\,” Carter reports. “And I just replied ‘thanks for noticing’\, and off I walked. But I thought\, ‘Fucking hell\, we’ve not even played one note yet’. At that point I felt like I was melting. I realised I had to get my shit together here.” \nAs if the matter was ever in doubt\, hours later\, he did just that. The stranger’s assertion that anyone stepping up to the microphone with the band who terrorised a nation faces one of the tallest orders in rock and roll – make no mistake\, filling big shoes requires big cojones – overlooked the fact that he was speaking to one of the few singers\, and perhaps even the <<only>> singer\, capable of handling the job. Over the course of three boisterously received concerts staged to raise funds for the imperilled Bush Hall\, this most famous and infamous of acts was born anew with energy\, power\, and the fiercest of joy. Never mind that the current iteration trades under the name the Sex Pistols with Frank Carter\, with immediate effect\, the band became a fist. \nSuch was its success\, in fact\, that this short series of concerts has blossomed into a busy diary. This year\, Carter and the Pistols – drummer Paul Cook\, guitarist Steve Jones and bassist Glen Matlock – are set to perform in Australia\, New Zealand\, Japan\, the United States of America\, mainland Europe\, the United Kingdom\, and elsewhere. They’ll headline halls and appear at festivals. In March\, the group will top the bill at a Teenage Cancer Trust concert at the Royal Albert Hall\, of all places. Much more of this and they’ll be playing at Buckingham Palace. \nFor anyone who might be wondering\, they’re doing these things because\, in 2025\, the Pistols are sensational once more. And they’re doing it is because they want to. \n“What I live by now is\, if it ain’t fun\, I ain’t doing it\,” the always reliably blunt Steve Jones says. “I’m too fucking old to be putting up with a bunch of old shit and acting like everything’s cool just to keep the ball rolling. Those days are gone. If it ain’t fun\, honestly\, I’m out of here. I ain’t got the energy for any crap any more.” \nThe credit for bringing Frank Carter into the orbit of the Pistols belongs to Glen Matlock’s youngest son. As a member of the erstwhile group Dead!\, Louis Matlock had seen the singer leading the charge while touring the UK as special guests to Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. Night after night\, he witnessed the fearlessness of a performer who approached live music as if it were a collision sport. Big shoes be damned\, if you’re looking for a singer\, the son told the father\, Frank’s your man. \n“Louis said\, the guy you need is Frank Carter\,” Glen Matlock says. “So I got his number off him and we arranged to have a coffee. I didn’t know much about him but Louis was always going on about him. So we had a play with him and Paul – Steve was out of the country – and Paul liked him\, as did I\, so we told Steve. I also went to see the Rattlesnakes at the Roundhouse [in Camden Town]\, where they did two sold out nights\, and I was impressed. Then Steve came over [from his home in Los Angeles] and we started rehearsing and that was it.” \nAsked to nominate the exact point at which he realised that this new version of the Sex Pistols became a force to be reckoned with\, Paul Cook replies that it was during the marching-boots style drum intro to Holidays In The Sun\, the first song on the first night at Bush Hall. “As soon as we did Holidays… I thought\, ‘Yeah\, this is working\,” he says. “This is going to be brilliant. This is going to be fantastic.” I was at the back there\, looking at Frank with his red hair\, and I was kind of getting flashbacks a little bit. I just thought\, ‘Wow\, this is how it was and how it should be’.” \nNaturally\, Carter himself needed no introduction to the Sex Pistols. Raised in a home in the satellite town of Watford that groaned from the weight of vinyl LPs\, as a 14-year-old\, he would listen to his father’s copy of the epochal Never Mind The Bollocks… Here’s The Sex Pistols whenever his parents were out of the house. Smitten by its irresistible mix of fury and wit\, blood and thunder\, like countless other artists-to-be before him\, he was at once captivated. Its guiding light helped lead him to the stage\, and\, in time\, to <<this>> stage. So pivotal was its place in his life\, in fact\, that standing in public view alongside Matlock\, Cook and Jones felt like a homecoming. \n“The one thing I took from the album that I put immediately into the way I perform was just the energy of it\,” Carter says. “I’ve heard records that <<sound>> energetic and then there are records that <<are>> energetic. It’s not even fast\, but there’s something about it that undeniably moves you and forces you to feel. It’s the serrated edge. It’s the hot knife. It’s blood in the water\, is what it is… It allows you to learn lessons that you don’t know are there to be learned. It changes you without you knowing that you’re being changed. Not much in the world can do that\, but great music does.” \nSo\, please\, let us not be in any doubt as to his credentials as an MC of chaos. In 2008\, 36 years after two members of the Pistols challenged each other to a fight after discovering they were playing different songs onstage at the 100 Club\, at the same venue\, as the singer with Gallows\, Carter chased an audience member who had thrown a pint of lager onstage up the venue’s stairs and out onto Oxford Street <<in the middle of the set>>. “I’ve been knocked out multiple times during shows\,” he says. “It comes with complications. Broken bones\, concussion\, whatever. But that’s part and parcel of being a storm.” \nHe even helped orchestrate his own Great Rock and Roll Swindle. In 2009\, after Warner Bros. signed Gallows for a million quid\, the group handed their new label the pummelling and furious Grey Britain\, an album that seemed designed to repel the casual listener. “Britain is fucked\,” Carter said at the time. “Grey Britain is all about what’s going on socially\, politically and economically in the UK\, and how it affects us.” \nSound familiar? As in\, there is no future in England’s dreaming? Of course\, in 2025\, bands and artists are less inclined than they once were to sing about issues that affect and bedevil an entire nation. With social media replacing punk rock as the fastest route into the public bloodstream\, rock and roll has entered an introspective phase. Just as well\, then\, that the Pistols’ State of the Union Address remains as pressing\, and as prescient\, as ever. Inevitably\, in the (almost) half century that has elapsed since a pair of Millwall supporting hot dog vendors in Piccadilly Circus unwittingly provided Steve Jones with the title for his group’s sole bona fide album – “never mind the bollocks\,” they would say\, meaning “don’t bother with that…” – London and Britain have changed almost beyond recognition. But at street level\, the problems and frustrations remain the same. \nThe Pistols themselves\, though\, <<have>> changed. Seventeen years after Steve Jones announced that “I am so fucking done with this”\, at the end of a taxing world tour\, it was the guitarist himself who suggested the group plot a course around the world in 2025. The decision was taken organically. Come the final night of a short autumn tour of Britain inspired by their success at Bush Hall\, each member agrees they were cooking with fire. As luck would have it\, the concert in London was attended by a number of promoters\, in town for a convention\, who duly tabled a series of offers to play up and across the world. The Pistols were back in the game. \nIt’s different\, too\, because in 2025 the group’s personnel no longer comprises elements of soap opera\, or pantomime. Instead\, unity and teamwork are the makings of the new machine; the cohesion of drums\, bass\, guitar and voice in the service of the songs. In this iteration\, the rock and roll itself is allowed to shine\, timeless and evergreen. There is no swindle. The people who wrote and played the music back in ’76 and ’77 are able to enjoy it anew. \n“Don’t forget\, the three of us learned to play together\,” Glen Matlock says. “It was all pretty much at a similar level of competency when we started out. And we kind of grew together as musicians.” And now? “Put it this way\,” he adds\, “someone who is close to the band\, I won’t say who\, said it’s the first time they’ve seen us coming offstage with smiles on our faces since ’96. Which is good\, because life’s too short for all that bollocks\, really.” \nAs for what might come after the Sex Pistols have said hello and goodnight to audiences across the globe\, no one is saying because no one seems to know. The promise of new music that was extinguished by a television interview with Bill Grundy and the subsequent shellshock of a young band receiving too much of everything\, far too soon for anyone\, may never be realised. But who can say for sure? At least for now\, there’s no point in asking – you’ll get no reply. \nBut what we do have\, for sure\, is Frank Carter and the Sex Pistols whipping up a storm across the globe in a manner that is familiar but fresh\, old but new. Catch it while you can\, for as long as it lasts. Because we won’t see their kind again. \nIAN WINWOO

SUMMARY:Citizen
DESCRIPTION:With the ability to excel in both quiet ballads and distorted rock anthems\, Citizen (which recently expanded to a full quintet with the addition of former touring members drummer Ben Russin and guitarist Mason Mercer) has an incredible knack for channeling raw emotion and energy into singalong songs. On Calling The Dogs\, the band exemplifies that passionate songwriting and styling while stripping back to what they do best: guitar-driven rock ‘n roll. \n  \nPicking up labels ranging from post-hardcore to shoegaze over the years\, it’s reductive to try to categorize Citizen as anything other than one of the best rock bands around today. Evolving from teenagers playing local dives to a vibrant band capable of selling out theaters and hitting major festivals around the world\, vocalist Mat Kerekes\, guitarist Nick Hamm and bassist Eric Hamm have earned their reputation as both tremendous songwriters and a must-see live act  — and they do both better than ever on their new album\, Calling The Dogs.

SUMMARY:Black Label Society
DESCRIPTION:BLACK LABEL SOCIETY Zakk Wylde – Vocals/Guitar John DeServio – Bass Dario Lorina – Guitar Jeff Fabb – Drums \nBlack Label Society bandleader Zakk Wylde wields his guitar like a Viking weapon\, bashing out thick riffage and squeezing out expressive squeals as if the glory of his Berserker brotherhood depends upon every single note\, which of course\, it does. Charismatic beast and consummate showman\, Wylde puts his massive heart and earnest soul on display with unbridled\, unchained\, animalistic passion in Black Label Society\, whether it’s a crushingly heavy blues-rock barnstormer or a piano-driven ode to a fallen brother. Each Black Label Society album is another opportunity to top the one before it\, but like AC/DC or The Rolling Stones\, BLS isn’t here to reinvent the wheel. If it ain’t broke\, don’t fix it. It’s a brand we ca While members of esteemed rock and metal institutions like Alice In Chains\, Metallica\, Type O Negative\, Clutch\, Danzig\, and Megadeth have passed through the band’s ranks\, Black Label Society has consistently been defined by Wylde’s unmistakable voice and signature guitar sound and the steady rumble of bassist John DeServio. BLS is rounded out\, in the studio and onstage\, by guitarist Dario Lorina (since 2013) and powerhouse drummer Jeff Fabb (since 2012). This is as much a band as it is a symbol of strength\, honor\, commitment\, and diehard “society\,” as evidenced by the legions of supporters who proudly donned the Black Label Society colors years before motorcycle culture was back in fashion. Black Label Society are vigilant keepers of the hard rock n’ roll flame\, protecting its sonic characteristics and vibe while engaging in reverent study of its chief architects. Given that Wylde’s kids’ are named Hayley Rae\, Jesse John Michael (named after his Godfather\, John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne)\, Hendrix Halen\, and Sabbath Page\, it’s clear that he takes his study of rock n’ roll’s greats very seriously. To many\, Wylde is synonymous with pinch harmonics as much as Chuck Berry dreamt up the duck walk. Zakk’s signature Les Paul Bullseye guitar hangs in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. His infamous leather bellbottoms hang in the Grammy Museum. His handprints are on Hollywood’s Rock Walk of Fame. He’s performed the National Anthem at major sporting events. He wrote the 2013 Major League Baseball theme for ESPN. He even momentarily joined Axl Rose\, Slash\, and Duff in Guns N’ Roses. He is a playable character in the Guitar Hero games. A lifelong disciple of Black Sabbath and the longest serving guitar-shredder for the Ozzman himself\, Wylde co-wrote modern Ozzy Osbourne classics like “No More Tears\,” “Mama I’m Coming Home\,” “Road to Nowhere\,” and “Miracle Man.” Together with Ozzy bassist Blasko and drummer Joey Castillo (ex-Queens Of The Stone Age)\, Wylde pays faithful tribute to the forefathers of metal as frontman for Zakk Sabbath. Before he graced the cover of every meaningful guitar magazine on the planet\, Zakk Wylde was a kid in New Jersey who picked up his instrument before he’d even hit high school. He was still a teenager when he got his demo tape into Ozzy’s hands. Together with the man he affectionately calls “the Boss” (and whose wife and manager\, Sharon\, he calls “Mom”)\, Wylde was part of the biggest selling album of the legendary Black Sabbath singer’s solo career\, No More Tears\, as well as the double-platinum Ozzmosis\, and earned a Grammy for the live recording of “I Don’t Want to Change the World.” One part invading horde and all parts traveling carnival party\, Black Label Society traverses the world powered by caffeine and cacophony. BLS engages and inspires audiences everywhere they go\, on every radio dial they burn\, inviting all comers to join in and participate in their brotherhood and sisterhood of hard rock and vigor. Now ten studio albums deep\, with solo records\, Ozzy shows\, and Zakk Sabbath tours all kicking ass simultaneously\, Black Label Society rides ever forward\, fist held high.
